SQL Formatting Best Practices

Consistently formatted SQL improves readability in code reviews, query editors, and documentation. Most SQL style guides share common conventions around keyword capitalization and clause indentation.

Uppercase keywords

SQL keywords (SELECT, FROM, WHERE, JOIN, etc.) are conventionally written in UPPERCASE while table names, column names, and aliases use the project's naming convention (often snake_case). This visual distinction helps readers quickly identify the structure of a query.

One clause per line

Each major SQL clause (SELECT, FROM, WHERE, GROUP BY, ORDER BY, HAVING, LIMIT) should start on a new line. JOIN conditions and their ON clauses are typically indented one level to show they subordinate to the JOIN keyword.

Performance impact of formatting

SQL formatting has zero impact on query execution — databases strip whitespace before parsing. However, consistently formatted queries are easier to optimize: reviewers can immediately spot missing indexes, unnecessary subqueries, or implicit type conversions that cause performance problems.
