Encryption and hashing get confused constantly, so it's worth being precise: hashing is one-way, encryption is two-way. If you need to send someone a secret message and have them read the original text back, you need encryption, not a hash. This tool encrypts and decrypts text using a passphrase, with a choice of four algorithms: AES, Triple DES, Rabbit, and RC4. Each has a very different reputation, and knowing which one to actually use matters.

AES

AES, Advanced Encryption Standard, is the one to reach for by default. It's the encryption standard used by governments, banks, and virtually every modern application that needs to protect data at rest or in transit. It's fast, well-studied, and as far as public cryptographic research shows, there's no practical attack against it when used correctly with a strong key.

Triple DES

Triple DES is the old guard, an attempt to extend the life of the original DES standard by running it three times with different keys. It's slower than AES and offers weaker security margins by modern standards. NIST has been phasing it out of federal use for years. You'll mostly encounter it in legacy financial systems and older hardware.

RC4 and Rabbit

RC4 is a stream cipher that used to be everywhere, including in early WEP and WPA Wi-Fi security. It's been broken in ways that matter for real-world security since the mid-2010s, and it should be treated as a compatibility option for old systems only. Rabbit is a newer stream cipher, faster than AES in software on some hardware, but lacks widespread scrutiny.

Passphrase strength

A word on passphrase strength: encryption is only as strong as the weakest link, and a short, guessable passphrase makes AES-256 pointless. Use something long and random, ideally generated rather than remembered, if what you're protecting actually matters. Everything here runs client-side, so your plaintext and passphrase never leave your browser.

Frequently asked questions

Is this the same as password hashing?

No — encryption is reversible with the right key, while hashing (like bcrypt) is one-way. Use encryption when you need to get the original text back later.

Can I lose access to my data?

Yes. If you forget the passphrase, the ciphertext cannot be recovered. There is no backdoor in AES.
